About the Coat of Arms...

Many people have asked about the ADLFC coat of arms. It all began in November 1998 when it was decided that Anthony was a man whose fan club simply cried out for a coat of arms. After all, Anthony is gallant, chivalrous and all those good things a knight should be.

The coat of arms is a 14th-century shield partitioned quarterly per saltire. There's a gold sun on purple (purpure), a rearing horse on green (vert), a silver rapier on blue (azure) and a wyvern on red (gules).

The original idea for the sun was for canting arms (a pun). De Longis, in Latin, can mean long lasting or far reaching. What could be more long lasting or far reaching than the sun? Besides, the sun is warm and shining and spreads its light throughout the world and we liked that idea because Anthony believes in leaving things a little better than he found them. All in all, we found the sun a warm and positive image. In heraldic terms, it can symbolize glory, splendor and life.

Next up, the horse. Because Anthony is an accomplished rider, proud horse owner and frequent competitor at the Cowboy Mounted Shooting events, the horse seemed like a natural. The horse can symbolize readiness for all events.

That there had to be a sword on the shield pretty much went without saying. Anthony is a sword master extraordinaire and many of you first met him through his fine work on Highlander. And as Anthony explains, "The sword is the weapon of choice for the hero. I admire the style, the elan, the dexterity, the accomplishment and the romance. I also cling to a certain romantic notion that people who use swords have to have a little more honor. There is a noblesse oblige. It holds up a yardstick to always trying to do your best." The sword, not surprisingly, usually symbolizes justice and honor.

Last, but not least, the wyvern. The wyvern is a winged dragon, usually represented with two legs. The dragon is a personal favorite of Anthony's. In fact, the wyvern image on the coat of arms comes directly from Anthony. The dragon often symbolizes protection and valor.

Noblesse Oblige!
